Meet the Panelists

  • Christina Shutt

    EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

    Christina is the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum executive director in Springfield, Illinois. She previously served as the executive director for the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, the African American Museum of history and culture for the state of Arkansas. Under her leadership, the Center was awarded first-time national museum accreditation, making it only the ninth Black culture museum in the United States to receive this distinction.

  • Edna Greene Medford, Ph.D.

    HISTORIAN

    Edna is a historian and author of Lincoln and Emancipation. Her research focus is African-American history, with particular emphasis on the Civil War and Reconstruction.

  • Robin von Seldeneck

    PRESIDENT & CEO

    Robin von Seldeneck is the President and CEO of the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum. Robin received her undergraduate degree from Mary Baldwin College where she double majored in History and Political Science; and her Master’s in Public Administration from James Madison University.

  • Since his assassination, Abraham Lincoln has often been referred to as the “Great Emancipator.” While he played a critical role in ending American chattel slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation and 13th Amendment, the truth is more complicated. Many Americans, Black and White, fought to end slavery, both during and before the Civil War. Further, while Lincoln opposed slavery, he held complex political and personal views on the institution and African Americans that changed over time.
